Being part of the business development team at work, networking events play a key role in my monthly activities and are a great way for me to get out of the office. Since we target an industry serving the government, these events are usually full of suits and old men with white hair. Being young and a female, I do my best to not let these work against me. With a relationship oriented business philosophy, it is my goal to not only meet as many people as possible, but to make sure people remember me and our conversation to open the door for future opportunities. Clearly, blending in by wearing a suit is not my style! In a room full of strangers, my confidence lies within a firm handshake and a showstopping outfit.
Tip #1 – Be professional, not sexy. Stick to mid length skirts and dresses or blouses that are not cut too low. You are representing your company after all!
Tip #2 –Pumps are elegant but I would stay under 4in. Try not to buy a brand new pair right before the event. When they haven’t been worn in yet, there is potential for a painful situation!
Tip #3 – Use your statement jewelry. A bold metal cuff or long earrings add a nice touch.
Tip #4 – Bring a simple handbag. You should be able to easily reach for more business cards or do a quick mirror check.
Tip #5 – Smile! It’s your best accessory 🙂
